Optical links are currently the fastest and most stable way to transmit data. Fiber-optic Internet coverage in Poland is steadily increasing and it is already possible to have access with speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s at home and in business. So users need a powerful, good fiber router.

A good router for fiber optics

A modern fiber-optic router must be characterized by high computing power that will allow efficient processing of large amounts of data flowing over a high-speed connection and a set of efficient network interfaces (WAN port, switch and Wi-Fi) with a bandwidth equal to or greater than the speed of the Internet connection, so that the data efficiently reaches the end devices.

Depending on the ISP's policy, we can connect the fiber router directly to the optical link or through an external modem. FRITZ family fiber optic routers!Boxes have an SFP module slot for different versions of the link: AON and GPON. These modules are equipped with LC/APC 8° sockets. Alternatively, the fiber-optic connected router has a factory-built socket of a specific type, so you should check before buying which version you will need in our particular case. Detailed instructions on how to connect and configure FRITZ routers!Box to work with fiber optic links can be found in the the advice section of our blog )

Every fiber optic router in the FRITZ family! The box also has an additional WAN port (dedicated, with a speed of 2.5 Gbit/s or separated by software from the switch, with a speed of 1Gbit/s), so that, while waiting for optical access, you can connect the device to the currently available Internet connection.

WiFi router for fiber optic cable

Any modern Internet router for home or small business must have a powerful wireless interface. In order to transfer large amounts of data from the Internet quickly enough, it is necessary to ensure adequate performance and avoid creating a bottleneck in our network. Since the router's supported fiber reaches 1 Gbit/s, the best solution will be a device with Wi-Fi 6, which allows up to 2,400 Mbit/s in the 5GHz band and 600 Mbit/s in the 2.4 GHz range ("gross" values, physical link performance).

Wide range of functions

FRITZ routers!Boxes designed to work on optical links have many additional features as standard. First of all, high-speed dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with support for Mesh functionality, and a built-in, gigabit switch for connecting devices without radio interfaces: servers and network devices such as servers and multifunction printers.

An integrated USB 3.0 slot allows you to connect a printer or drive to the router and then share it on the network. Thanks to the file server functionality of the FRITZ!NAS you can share the audio, video and photo files on the drive with users of your local network at home or business. Smart TV and network media player users will be interested in UPnP AV/DLNA support.

FRITZ devices!Boxes also have a built-in PBX, equipped with a DECT base station, so you can use up to 6 wireless phones and use VoIP Internet telephony (10 numbers).

The DECT base additionally allows you to configure many Smart Home features (lighting control, smart plugs and thermostats).

FRITZ routers!Box are easy to install and configure thanks to a user-friendly web interface in Polish and free FRITZ applications!App for Android and iOS.

Q&A - frequent questions
+
Before connecting your own router directly to a fiber optic cable, check with your carrier to see if they allow such a connection. Unauthorized connection may damage the link and the router.
+
Ask your supplier for an ONT modem. It is a device with a fiber optic input and LAN output to which you can connect a FRITZ router!Box (to the WAN port). If you have a router from your carrier with a built-in ONT, the best solution would be to set it to "bridge" mode and connect the FRITZ router!Box to LAN port.
+
Yes, but before connecting the router directly to the fiber optic cable, make sure that the operator gives this option. If so, check with which technology (GPON, AON or XGS-PON). Unauthorized connection may damage the link and the router.
